![]() Bus passengers using Christchurch High Street are set to benefit from improvements by Bournemouth, Christchurch and Poole Council that will make their journey safer and more efficient. The work involves providing better bus shelters fitted with real time information and raised curbs to allow easy level access on and off the bus. ZCD welcomes this investment to support more sustainable travel options for people living and working in the town. ![]() Dorset Council announced work to replace planters, trees and seating on Victoria Road, Ferndown later in the year. Protecting biodiversity will be a key focus of the new scheme, with "mature, specially-selected trees and sustainable landscaping" aiming to ensure the area is "vibrant, welcoming, and environmentally conscious". ZCD welcomes such works as planting trees in urban areas is vital in helping communities adapt to the changing climate by reducing temperatures, as well as providing a haven for wildlife and joy to people. ![]() The Bourne Stream flows from Canford Heath to Bournemouth Pier. A group of local organisations, including BCP Council, the Environment Agency, Natural England, Bournemouth University, local wildlife trusts, and Bournemouth and Wessex Water companies has come together to re-form the Bourne Stream Partnership. The aim is to find the best ways to keep the water clean, protect wildlife, and ensure a healthy environment for everyone to enjoy. ZCD sees this kind of collaborative effort as essential if we are to protect and restore our precious water ways and reverse the massive decline in wildlife. ZCD urges the partnership to engage in a meaningful way with the community so that the full benefits are realised for both people and wildlife in such an urban setting.
![]() Bournemouth, Christchurch and Poole (BCP) Council plan to spend £20M to replace waste vehicles reaching the end of their life with lower carbon alternatives. It is the second stage of the council's plan to make its fleet greener, and will see 280 new vehicles purchased over the next three years. Whilst ZCD applauds this decision, the real climate benefits come if the trucks are powered by renewable energy. Sadly in 2023, just 9% of the electricity consumed in BCP came from home grown renewable energy. Dorset is the best place for solar energy generation in the UK, which is why ZCD recommends much greater roof solar installation to cut energy bills and generate green electricity. |
